CAN bus diagnostics and robustness

A Linux SocketCAN toolbox for capturing, replaying and disturbing communication between two embedded systems.
01 — Context / problem

Context & problem

During prototype testing, firmware defects are not always directly visible. An error may remain silent, a counter may be missing or behaviour may become difficult to reproduce afterwards. DiagPack CAN aims to provide a lightweight PC-side tool to observe CAN communication and reconstruct the conditions leading to a problem more easily.

02 — Challenge & solution

Challenge & solution

DiagPack CAN uses Linux and SocketCAN with a command-line interface. It captures CAN frames into timestamped JSON Lines logs, replays recorded scenarios and injects disturbances to exercise firmware under reproducible conditions. Its architecture separates capture, replay, stress testing, logging and SocketCAN access, keeping the tool simple and reusable across projects.

03 — Outcome

Outcome

A reusable diagnostic toolbox for CAN prototype testing: communication can be captured and structured, then replayed or disturbed to reproduce scenarios and reveal limitations in firmware observability or error handling more quickly. DiagPack CAN is intended in particular as a bench tool for STM32 Pump Supervisor, while remaining generic enough for other embedded projects.
